PERCENT INCREASE CALCULATOR

Start value:

End value:

Our percent increase calculator uses this formula:

((y2 - y1) / y1)*100 = your percentage change
(where y1=start value and y2=end value)
Enter the current value and the new value in the form above and click on the button. The percent increase calculator will show the percentage increase.

The percentage increase formula is used to determine the percentage by which a quantity has increased over a particular period of time. It is calculated by first finding the absolute increase of the quantity by subtracting the base value from the increased base value. The result of this subtraction is then divided by the base value, which is then multiplied by 100 to get the percent increase. The absolute value of the base value is used to ensure that the result of the equation is a positive value, regardless of whether the base value is positive or negative. This formula is useful for quickly and accurately calculating the percentage increase of a quantity over a given period of time.

Percentage increase formula

The percent increase calculator observes the following formula:

(V2-V1) / |V1| * 100

Note: the "|" symbol indicates an absolute value, which means that negative values become positive.

Examples

Over the course of a year, the number of members of an association has increased from 90 to 110 people. How to compute the percentage increase?

Step 1: Calculate the absolute increase.
The original number of members was 90, one year later it was 110. The absolute increase is therefore 110 - 90 = 20.

Step 2. Now you need to determine the absolute increase as a proportion of the base value 90.
To do this, you can calculate this division:
20 / 90 = 0.22

Now convert the result into percentage notation: move the decimal point two places to the left and add the percentage sign.
Then you get the result of the calculation: the number of members in the association has increased by 22%.
